Amanecer Community Counseling Services

Our History

Enhancing the quality of life for the community of Los Angeles since 1975

Founded in 1975 as Community Counseling Services at United Methodist Church in Downtown Los Angeles, the agency was originally supported solely by charitable contributions, church donations, United Way and limited client fees. For nearly a decade, the agency remained small and served only adult clients.

In 1984, the agency was awarded a contract with the County Department of Mental Health, allowing it to co-locate with La Clinica Oscar Romero, a public health clinic serving the medical needs of the Central American refugee population of the Pico-Union District in Los Angeles. In 1995, additional funding became available to serve not only the adult population, but also the children of the area in need of mental health services, and the agency moved to its current location on Wilshire Boulevard in Downtown Los Angeles.

Growing, Changing, Serving

Today, Amanecer is a comprehensive mental-health facility providing outpatient services to adults and children, with a continuing commitment to the minority population of Los Angeles. Our client base has changed and grown in complexity through the years. We have adapted to meet these challenges by focusing on eliminating barriers to care for our clients. We have increased their access to services by providing outreach and treatment to families in their homes, schools, welfare offices and other community settings. Amanecer’s programs have expanded to address the increased need for specialized behavioral health services, which are provided by a professional staff that is 70% bilingual/bicultural Spanish-speaking.

From executive leadership and therapists, to case managers and administrative support, our staff is committed to honoring the trust clients place in Amanecer by upholding our values of Community Service, Integrity, Respect, Quality and Dignity.
